Smart Connectivity for Precision Fish Farming
How digitising a sturgeon farm with hybrid LoRa-satellite connectivity, non-invasive retrofit, and instant scalability.

The Challenge: scaling without stopping
In intensive aquaculture, especially in sturgeon farming for caviar production, water management is a critical operational factor. The stability of water flow directly impacts biomass survival, productivity, and regulatory compliance. Continuous monitoring of parameters such as water consumption, flow rate, temperature and oxygenation is therefore essential.
The company we worked with operated a mature facility that was not originally designed for wireless monitoring. Modernising the plant was a necessity, but came with clear constraints. Installing new wired infrastructure would have required invasive works around large and deep tanks, with high costs and operational risk. At the same time, water consumption data was still being collected manually, with monthly on-site inspections needed to report figures to the competent authorities.
The objective was clear: introduce real-time, reliable monitoring without interrupting operations or rebuilding the infrastructure from scratch.
The Solution: a hybrid, retrofit-ready connectivity architecture
Apogeo designed and deployed a tailored connectivity solution built around the existing plant layout. The system is based on a distributed network of smart nodes connected directly to the flow meters installed on each water pump. These nodes collect water consumption data continuously and transmit it via low-power radio (LoRa) to a local gateway.
Under standard conditions, the gateway forwards the data through the facility’s corporate network via Ethernet to a dedicated cloud platform, where data is processed and visualised in near real time. To ensure business continuity, the architecture includes a satellite fallback: in case of fixed network outages or connectivity issues, data transmission automatically switches to a direct-to-satellite channel, guaranteeing uninterrupted data flow even in isolated or failure scenarios.
The entire system was deployed within the existing perimeter of the facility, with no excavation, no additional cabling, and no downtime. The solution was designed as a true industrial retrofit: plug, connect and scale.
Apogeo’s team carried out on-site technical inspections, managed node and gateway installation, validated data transmission across all pumps, and supported plant personnel through training and onboarding activities.

What this approach enabled
The implemented architecture delivered immediate and measurable operational benefits:
- Continuous, near real-time monitoring of water consumption across all pumping points
- A non-invasive upgrade, fully integrated with existing equipment
- Hybrid terrestrial and satellite connectivity for guaranteed service continuity
- Higher data collection frequency, enabling more accurate reporting and faster anomaly detection
- Instant scalability, allowing additional sensors and nodes to be added without reworking the system
- Reduced operational effort by eliminating manual data collection visits
The result is a resilient monitoring infrastructure designed to grow with the facility, support regulatory requirements, and reduce operational risk.
The Result: infrastructure built for continuity
By adopting a hybrid and redundant connectivity model, the company was able to modernise its aquaculture operations without compromising reliability or disrupting production. Instead of replacing what already worked, the solution built around it—adding intelligence, automation, and resilience layer by layer.
This project demonstrates that digitalisation in critical environments doesn’t require a full overhaul. It requires a connectivity strategy that adapts to real-world constraints and ensures continuity first.
